FROM TROUSERS WORN BY GOLD MINERS TO A CLASSIC
Jeans have an eventful history. They were invented by Levi Strauss, a German who emigrated to the United States of America. Enticed by the California Gold Rush, he relocated from New York to San Francisco in 1853. There he sold everyday items like toothbrushes, braces and tarpaulin made of hemp fibres. It was with this tarpaulin that he made his first trousers. In 1872, he was approached by the tailor Jacob Davis. Davis had the idea of making the trouser seams more sturdy using rivets. However, he lacked the money to have his idea patented. Levi Strauss was extremely enthusiastic about the idea and a year later the pair registered a patent for the jeans. After the jeans had been patented, they began to use cotton fabric dyed indigo blue instead of tarpaulin – blue jeans were born.

In the 1950s, the former workman’s trousers became very popular with young people. They were a symbol of rebellion against their parents’ generation. Stars like Marlon Brando and James Dean made men’s jeans famous. American soldiers brought the blue trousers to Germany, where the jeans enjoyed a mixed reception. Today, jeans are an essential part of the fashion world: unlike most other items of clothing, they have developed into a classic that never goes out of fashion.
